To Carry On or Not To Carry on… That is the question.

Traveler’s Choice Sedona Carry On Spinner Luggage

With great airfares available with several airlines, now is the time as ever to start traveling. However, with the restrictions enforced due to 9/11, traveling can be so confusing especially when it comes to carry on or checked luggage.  Do you carry liquids and how much? Will my carry on fit with this airline? Should I check it or can I carry it on? So many questions! So much traveling to be had!

Fortunately, the TSA rules for liquids and gels are pretty standard domestically. Just remember 3-1-1. All liquids, gels, creams, and pastes must fit in a small 3.4oz (100ml) container. All those containers must fit in 1 quart sized clear bag and only 1 clear bag per traveler. Luckily, there are several travel-sized bags that fit these requirements and some even come with the containers for you to fill!

Unfortunately, carry on luggage size restrictions vary by airlines and that seems to change every few years or so. Three major airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines have all decreased their size allotment recently to 22” long x 14” wide x 9”tall (56 x 36 x 23cm). That’s not more than 45 linear inches combined and that includes all handles and wheels! Talk about down-sizing!  They usually will have a carry on size check near the check-in counter, so stay up to date and find out what your airline will allow.

Southwest Airlines and Jet Blue on the other hand allow carry ons to be 24” long x 16” wide x 10” tall. That’s a total of 50 linear inches! So much more space! Strange how the dimensions have gone down yet the planes haven’t changed in size at all. Anyone notice that? Virgin Airlines sticks with the larger airlines and limits carry ons to 22 x 14 x 9, even for international flights.

You’ll have to check each airlines dimension requirements for under the seat and international flights and remember any listed dimensions have to include all handles and wheels! International flights vary slightly per airline but remain roughly the same.

Flying has some new restrictions, but with a little knowledge everything can be a little easier and your travel plans can continue as usual. So to carry on or not to carry on, ultimately depends on which airline you decide to use.
